For all the dogs who've touched our hearts

It takes a village

Living with a special needs dog can be hard work, so surround yourself with people who care and will support you and your dog.

A short tale of gratitude

It’s 3am and I’m sitting on the couch typing in the dark. Merlin was accidentally locked out of his sleeping spot and then couldn’t settle.

I tried belly rubs, letting him outside and then got dressed in case he needed a poop walk. Thankfully by the time I got back he had relaxed; I really didn’t relish walking in the middle of the night!

I’m reminded of what it was like for years; the restlessness, the whining and barking, the sleepless nights caused by his pain and fear.

The self doubt that plagued me throughout it all.

I’m grateful for the help of excellent health care professionals whose patient expertise got Merlin to stability and happiness. I’m grateful for my wonderful family and friends who provided encouragement, advice and a safe place to fall apart.

It really does take a village to raise some dogs. Never be afraid to ask for help – special needs dogs are hard work.

I’m off now to get some sleep. Tomorrow is a new day and happily Merlin and I will enjoy it together.
