For all the dogs who've touched our hearts

Two steps forward…

Progress isn't linear. Whether you're teaching a dog or building a website, it's a wobbly, windy route that takes trust and perseverance

One step back

The wobbly route of progress

This morning I decided to celebrate. You see last Friday I finished my new website. It was months of work and I was so excited to have it done. I loved the way it looked; fresh, bright and modern, but there’s a catch to this story – my tech support messed up. Five days later, after hours of chats and emails, it’s still not fixed. The brand new site has vanished and I have no idea how to fix it.

At first I was devastated. I’d poured hours into its creation and was looking forward to setting it free. I moped around for a couple of days, poured out my sorrows to family and friends and slowly began to feel optimistic.

Losing the site is not the end of the world. I have a backup and more skills than when I started; if I have to rebuild it, it may even be better. It was a challenging task, I’m super proud of what I achieved, so I’m buying myself a pair of shoes even though I haven’t reached my end goal.

Training our dogs can be like this, we have a vision in our head and ideas of how to do it. Sometimes, maybe often, it doesn’t work out exactly as we planned but we can be super proud of what we do achieve and celebrate what we learn. After all, it’s time spent with our dogs discovering who they are while building trust and connection.

In the long run the result may be even better.
